Papaver spp.

The classic Hungarian Breadseed poppy. The ephemeral, lavendar flowers quickly give way to the rouned pods that this variety is known for. Let pods grow to their largest size (when plants begin to dry down for the season) before you harvest. This makes for the greatest harvest edible seeds and the largest pods for dried flower arrangements.

When sowing poppy seeds it may be helpful to cold stratify them to improve germination. To do this you will sow seeds normally, water them in, and then place your growing container in a cool place (such as a refrigerator) for 3-4 days before returning to normal growing location.
