Phaseolus coccineus
Runner beans, also known as butter beans, are a legume native to the Mexican and Guatemalan highlands. Due to this, runner beans tend to be more cold hardy than their common bean relatives, sprouting as soon as soil temperatures reach 50ºF.
Scarlet runner bean may be the most widely cultivated variety of this species, due to the incredible climbing abilities of its vines (10ft or higher!) and its beautiful red flowers. We love this multipurpose variety, growing it as a hedge for summer privacy and harvesting the edible beans in the fall. Best of all, this variety is a hummingbird magnet!
